This Day in Philly Sports History – September 29

Presented by the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame

Well, that certainly didn’t play out the way we hoped.

The Eagles were bullied, out-physicaled, and dominated by the Bears once again. They now have a desperate Rams team coming to South Philly next week.

Hopefully, the Phillies can give us something to cheer about this afternoon.

September 29 has seen some Phillies firsts, a strong ending, and an epic Eagles performance.

A First Time for Everything

On this day in 1915 the Phillies beat the Boston Braves 5-0.  Grover Cleveland Alexander pitched a 1-hitter, the fifth of his career.  The win gave the Phillies their first ever National League Pennant.

Trivia – Who was the Phillies opponent in the 1915 World Series? (Answer below)

Strong Ending

On this day in 1968, the Phillies closed out a disappointing season with a 10-3 win over the Mets.

Dick Allen ended the season with a three-home-run, seven-RBI game that included a ninth-inning grand slam.

Not a bad way to finish the season.

Brother vs. Brother

On this day in 1986, the Phillies lost to the Cubs 8-3 at the Vet.

Rookie Greg Maddux was on the mound for the Cubs.

On the other side for the Phillies was another rookie—and Maddux’s older brother, Mike.

It was the first time in MLB history that a pair of rookie brothers faced each other as starting pitchers.

Weapon X

On this day in 2002, the Eagles hosted the Houston Texans at the Vet for the first time ever.

It was a sloppy game early, with the Eagles falling behind 7-0 and turning the ball over three times.

But the defense forced three turnovers of its own and sacked rookie quarterback David Carr seven times as the Eagles pulled away for a 35-17 victory.

And Brian Dawkins did something that no player in NFL history had ever done before—or has done since.

He recorded a sack, an interception, a fumble recovery, and a touchdown reception on a fake punt.

A sack. An interception. A fumble recovery. A touchdown.

Dawk had himself a quadrafecta.

Trivia Answer – The Phillies played the Boston Red Sox in the 1915 World Series losing 4 games to 1.
