Presented by the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame
The Phillies once again failed to whittle down their magic number, and now things get very interesting this weekend. There’s a very real possibility they could miss the postseason altogether.
September 25 has seen some unique moments in Phillies history.
Welcome to the Club
On this day in 1929, the Phillies beat the Brooklyn Robins in both games of a doubleheader, 10-9 and 8-5.
In the first game, Don Hurst hit his 30th home run of the season, giving the Phillies three players with at least 30 homers.
That made the Phillies the first team in MLB history to have three players hit 30 or more home runs in the same season.
Trivia – The Phillies have had just one other season when three or more players hit at least 30 home runs. What year was it, and who were the players? (Answer below)
A Little Help Please
On this day in 1990, the Phillies lost to the Cubs 1-0 at the Vet.
Terry Mulholland pitched a complete game, allowing just two hits—and both came from Bernard Gilkey.
Gilkey led off the game with a triple and later scored on a sacrifice fly. He then added a double in the ninth inning.
That was it. Two hits, one run, and a complete-game loss for Mulholland.
If only the offense had done its part.
They All Count the Same
On this day in 2015, the Phillies beat the Nationals 8-2 in D.C., thanks in part to four home runs.
Aaron Altherr hit two of them—and one was an inside-the-park grand slam.
Not a bad way to leave the yard without actually leaving the yard.
Trivia Answer – In 2009 Ryan Howard hit 45, Jayson Werth hit 36, Raul Ibanez hit 34 and Chase Utley hit 31
