This Day in Philly Sports History – September 14

Presented by the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame

It’s a Victory Monday.  It wasn’t pretty, but it didn’t have to be. Jalen Hurts played great as the Eagles held on to win, and I saw enough from the offense to give me some hope.

Meanwhile, it wasn’t the best weekend for the Phillies, as their division championship hopes took a big hit after losing two of three to the Braves. The Union remain red hot, winning again and positioning themselves for the playoffs.

September 14 has seen some Phillies milestones, the Eagles struggle in their new home, and some memorable moments in Phillies playoff races.

Milestones

On this day in 1984, the Phillies beat the Expos 9-5 behind two homers and three RBI from Mike Schmidt.

For Schmidt, it was his seventh consecutive season with more than 100 RBI, setting a new Phillies record.

On the mound, Steve Carlton picked up the win, the 235th of his Phillies career, setting a new team record for wins.

Trivia – Who did Carlton pass for the Phillies all-time wins record? (Answer below)

House of Horrors

On this day in 2003, the Eagles continued their struggles in their new home. A week after getting shut out by the Buccaneers, they lost their second game at the Linc, falling 31-10 to the Patriots. Donovan McNabb was sacked eight times, threw two interceptions, and fumbled twice. Brian Westbrook and Duce Staley also lost fumbles for the Eagles.

Luckily, they had a bye in Week 3. Andy Reid went to work, fixed the issues, and the Eagles closed out the season by winning 10 of their final 12 games.

Different Year, Same Result

On this day in 2007, the Phillies beat the Mets 3-2 on Greg Dobbs’ sacrifice fly in the top of the 10th inning in the first game of a three-game series.

The Phillies would sweep the Mets, moving within 3½ games of them for first place before eventually catching and passing them on the final day of the season.

One year later, the Phillies swept both games of a doubleheader against the Brewers, 7-3 and 6-1, completing a four-game sweep and moving within one game of the Mets for first place in the NL East.

A week later, they’d pass the Mets—and we all know how that season worked out.

In Game 1 of the doubleheader, Chase Utley was hit by a pitch for the 26th time that season, setting a new Phillies record and breaking his own mark from 2007.

Clincher

On this day in 2011, the Phillies beat the Astros 1-0 behind Roy Halladay, who went the distance.

The win clinched a playoff spot for the Phillies in their 146th game, breaking the team record set by the 1915 Phillies, who clinched the pennant in their 148th game.

Trivia Answer – Steve Carlton passed Robin Roberts as the Phillies all-time win leader.
