This Day in Philly Sports History – June 29

Presented by the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame

The Phillies keep finding ways to win and are chipping away at the Braves lead which now stands at 3.  June 29 has seen Phillies moments that include homers and saves.

Samuel is Grand

In 1986 the Phillies were in St. Louis.  They left with an 8-7 win when Juan Samuel hit a grand slam in the top of the 9th off of Todd Worrell.  It was Samuel’s first career grand slam.  Ron Roenicke also homered for the Phillies.  Von Hayes hit a 3-run homer in game 2 to help the Phillies roll to an 11-3 win.

Bedrosian Extends Streak

A year later the Phillies beat the Pirates in both ends of a doubleheader.  Chris James homered in game 1 to help the Phillies win 6-5.  Steve Bedrosian, in the midst of a Cy Young season, saved his 12th consecutive game, setting an MLB record.  He would extend it to 13 the next night.

Trivia – Who hold the MLB record for consecutive saves today? (Answer Below)

JR’s Coming to Town

The Flyers announced that they have agreed in principle to a deal with free agent Jeremy Roenick on this day in 2001.  The Coyotes gave the Flyers permission to negotiate and Bobby Clarke, knowing that the story would leak, received special permission from the NHL to announce the deal before the start of free agency on July 1.  Roenick officially signed the 5-year $37.5 million contract on July 2.  He was only here for three years but Roenick was a fan favorite and had some great moments during his time in Philly.  He was traded to the Kings to help free up cap space for Peter Forsberg.

Chooooch

Jim Thome homered and Kevin Milwood pitched 7 2/3 solid innings to help the Phillies beat the Orioles 4-3.  Jose Mesa saved his 17th game of the 2003 season.  The save also made him the Phillies all-time career leader in saves, passing Bedrosian.  Mesa is currently second behind Jonathon Papelbon

Trivia Answer – Eric Gagne holds the MLB record with 84 consecutive saves from 2022-2024.  Brad Lidge holds the Phillies record with 44 straight.
