This Day in Philly Sports History – June 23

Presented by the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame

The Phillies laid an egg last night but that happens in a 162 game season.  France beat Iraq at the Linc last night in a World Cup Match that featured a 2-hour rain delay.  What will the Sixers do tonight in the Draft?  You’re guess is a good as mine.  June 23 saw its share of historical moments.

Happy Rick Wise Day

Happy Rick Wise Day.  On this day in 1971the Phillies and Reds played in Cincinnati.  Rick Wise pulled a Bugs Bunny impersonation and did it all.  Aside from a walk of Dave Concepcion in the 6th, he was perfect on the mound, pitching his only career no-hitter.  At the plate he was almost as good.  Wise went 2-4 with 2 home runs and 3 RBI.  He is the only player in MLB history to pitch a no-hitter and hit 2 homers and a double in a game.  He likely will be the last with only Ohtani having a legitimate chance and he typically doesn’t go deep enough to get a no-hitter.

Nothing but the Hits

On this day in 1986 the Phillies pounded out 20 hits and scored 19 runs in a 19-1 win over the Cubs.  They hit a team record 11 doubles as a part of 15 extra base hits.  The 15 extra base hits were a National League record.  Juan Samuel hit 2 homers and a while knocking in 6 runs.  Rick Schu, Glen Wilson and John Russell each had two doubles. Mike Schmidt and Milt Thompson also homered for the Phillies.  On the mound that day for the Cubs was a young Jamie Moyer who lasted only 2 2/3 innings against his hometown team.  Meanwhile, Shane Rawley hit a complete game for the Phillies.

Thome Walks it Off…Again

The Phillies and the Rays squared off at Citizens Bank Park on this day in 2012.  Jimmy Rollins and Juan Pierre both homered off of Rays starter James Shields.  The Rays would tie it at 6 in the top of the 9th.  Jim Thome pinch hit in the bottom of the 9th and hit a homer to give the Phillies the walk off win.  It was his first and only walk off as a member of the Phillies.  It was his 13th of his career, however, which is the Major League record.  The win was also Charlie Manuel’s 900th career win as a manager.

Trivia – Who is the Phillies career leader in walk off homeruns? (Answer Below)

Franco with a 5 Spot

On this day in 2015 the Phillies beat the Yankees 11-6 in New York.  Maikel Franco went 2-3 with a homer and double, driving in 5 runs.  It was his second consecutive game with 5 RBI, the first Phillie to do it.  Cameron Rupp homered and Andres Blanco hit a double and a triple with 3 RBI.

Trivia Answer – Mike Schmidt had 10 walk off homeruns for the Phillies.  Ryan Howard is 2nd with 6 and Del Ennis and Pat Burrell are 3rd with 5 each.
