The Phillies bounced back in a big way this weekend taking both games against the Mets and taking the series. Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper starred, combining for 5 homers. Schwarber hit 3 on Saturday including two in the 3rd inning. Harper hit for the cycle on Saturday as well. June 22 saw some records set for the Phillies and an interesting Flyers draft pick.
Bowa is Grand
Larry Bowa hit his only career grand slam on this day in the 7th inning against the Reds at the Vet. Mike Schmidt also added two homers while Bake McBride and Richie Hebner also homered. The Phillies survived a slug fest beating the Reds 15-9. Not known for his power, Bowa hit 15 career homeruns, 13 of them while playing for the Phillies.
One Step Closer to the Hit King
Pete Rose drove in Ivan DeJesus with a double in the third inning of the Phillies 1982 game in St. Louis. The RBI tied the game but more importantly the double was hit #3,772 for Rose. It moved him into second place on the all-time list behind Ty Cobb. The Phillies would lose the game 3-2.
Trivia – Who did Pete Rose pass for 2nd place on the all-time hit list? (Answer Below)
Peter Forsberg
The Flyers drafted Peter Forsberg with the #6 pick overall in the 1991 NHL Draft. It was a controversial pick and general manager Russ Farwell was ripped for the pick. The Hockey News had Forsberg ranked as a second round pick, with a possibility of sneaking into the bottom of the first. Farwell defended the pick saying you’ll see. Well, we did, kind of. Forsberg was a piece of the trade a year later that would bring Eric Lindros to the Flyers. Forsberg would go on to win 2 Cups with the Avalanche, setting off one of the biggest what ifs in Philly Sports history.
Moyer Makes History
The Phillies beat Cleveland on this day in 2010. Ryan Howard and Jayson Werth drove in 1st inning runs. Jamie Moyer pitched 8 strong innings giving up only 2 hits and 1 run while striking out 5. The run came on a homer by Russell Branyan and was the 505th career homer he had given up, tying him with former Phillie Robin Roberts for most in MLB history.
Trivia Answer – Pete Rose passed Hank Aaron for #2 on the all-time hit list on this day in 1982.
