This Day in Philly Sports History – June 16

Presented by the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame

The Phillies bounced back with a big win against Marlins. Gabriel Ricones Jr. hit his first career homerun last night and Zack Wheeler was sold. June 16 has seen a few Phillies milestones, a franchise altering day for the Sixers and some U.S. Open action at Merion.

Rose Walks it Off

In 1979 the Phillies and Reds squared off at the Vet. Steve Carlton pitched 8 1/3 solid innings striking out eight. The Phillies found themselves tied at 3 in the bottom of the ninth. They managed to load the bases with no outs. Up stepped Pete Rose with a chance to beat his former team. Rose did get the walk-off, game winning RBI the unconventional way by drawing a walk. A win is win.

Franchise Altering Trades

June 16, 1986, changed the course of the Sixers franchise forever as the team made not one but two controversial moves that you could argue they still haven’t overcome. Heading into the draft the next day, the Sixers owned the 1st and 21st picks in the draft and had a young Charles Barkley to build around. In the first move they traded former MVP and 1983 Finals hero Moses Malone along with Terry Catledge (1985 1st Round pick), the 1986 21st pick and first-rounder in 1988 to Washington for Jeff Ruland and Cliff Robinson. They then followed that up with traded the #1 overall pick in 1986 to Cleveland for Roy Hinson and future considerations. The Cavs used that pick to take Brad Daugherty. To say the trades didn’t work out is an understatement. Imagine the Sixers going into the late 80s/early 90s with a frontcourt that included Brad Daugherty and Charles Barkley…

Lieberthal Powers the Phillies

On this day in 1998 the Phillies found themselves down 7-1 to the Pirates at the Vet heading into the bottom of the ninth. Tyler Green had a rough outing, but the bullpen tightened up, but the Phillies seemed poised for a loss until the bats woke up. A couple of hits, a couple of walks, and an error led to Mike Lieberthal stepping out. With 2-out and 2 on he hit the walk-off 3-run homer to give the Phillies the 9-8 win.

Jamie Moyer History Made

You don’t play for 25 seasons without setting a few records. On this day in 2010 Jamie Moyer set two. The Phillies played the Yankees in the new Yankee Stadium. Moyer was on the mound that day for the Phillies. The new Yankee Stadium was the 48th different stadium Moyer pitched in. Moyer was solid going eight strong innings, striking out five and giving up two earned runs. One of them came on a homerun by Robinson Cano. For Moyer, who holds the Major League record for career homeruns given up, the new Yankee Stadium became the 42nd different stadium he had given up a homerun in – also an MLB record. Ryan Howard and Jayson Werth went deep while Shane Victorino had a 3-run triple to help the Phillies to the 6-3 win.

Trivia – Jamie Moyer gave up an MLB record 522 homeruns in his career. Which player has hit the most off Moyer? (Answer Below)

Cliff Lee – One Man Show

Cliff pitched a complete game shutout, giving up two hits and striking out four on this day in 2011. Ryan Howard homered and Lee helped himself going 2-3 with a double and RBI as the Phillies beat the Marlins 3-0. It was the Phils seventh straight win.

Disappointment for Lefty…Again

Heading into the final round of the 2013 U.S. Open at Merion, Phil Mickelson held a one stroke lead with six golfers within two strokes. It was shaping up to be an epic day. Phil had some putting struggles early, double bogeying the 3rd and 5th holes. He eagled on the 10th to regain the lead. Justin Rose meanwhile birdied the 12th and 13th. After Mickelson bogeyed the 13th, Rose took the lead for good. Phil had a chance to tie on 16 but missed the birdie putt. For Rose it was his first major title and for Mickelson it was another in a long line of U.S. Open disappointments. The U.S. Open will return to Merion in 2030.

Trivia Answer – Manny Ramirez has hit ten homeruns off Jamie Moyer.
