This Day in Philly Sports History – June 11

Presented by the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame

The Phillies win another series beating the Blue Jays 7-4. They’re off today before heading to Milwaukee for a huge weekend series. June 11 had seen a lot of homeruns in Phillies history, Hall of Famers for the A’s, and a heartbreaking loss for the Flyers.

Connie Mack’s Hall of Fame Team

In 1927 Connie Mack was trying to build his A’s into a team that could compete with the Yankees. On this day they lost to the Tigers 6-5 at Shibe Park but in the ninth inning Mack fielded a team that included seven future Hall of Famers. The lineup included Mickey Cochrane (PH), Ty Cobb (RF), Eddie Collins (2B), Jimmie Foxx (1B), Lefty Grove (P), Al Simmons (CF), and Zack Wheat (LF). The 1927 A’s would finish in second place behind the Yankees 91-63 but nineteen games back. They would win championships in 29 & 30 and the AL Pennant in 31.

Bull’s Blast

The Phillies and Braves played in a slugfest in Atlanta on this day in 1977. The Phillies jumped out early, scoring five in the first on a Greg Luzinski grand slam and a solo shot by Garry Maddox. They’d tack on five in the sixth as well but the Phillies pitching struggled. They would hold on to win 13-10. Luzinski finished going 3-4 with seven RBI, the grand slam and two doubles.

Von Hayes Has Himself a Day

Fans coming to the Vet for the Phillies vs. Mets game in 1985 didn’t expect what they saw. The Phillies scored nine in the first inning aided by two Von Hayes homers. He led the game off with one and came up later in the inning to hit a grand slam. From there the Phillies poured it on beating the Mets 26-7, setting a modern record for runs scored in a game. They tied a team record for hits (27) including ten doubles – three by Bo Diaz. Hayes ended the day 3-6 with six RBI and four runs scored.

Trivia – The Phillies had 47 total bases that day at the Vet but that’s not their team record. What is their record for total bases in a game and when did that game occur? (Answer Below)

The Streak is Over

Lenny Dykstra entered the Phillies doubleheader against the Expos on a 23-game hitting streak and batting .407. The Phillies lost both games (5-0 and 3-2) while Lenny went a combined 0-8 in the games. The streak was over, his average dipped below .400. Lenny would remain in the mix for the batting title for most of the year before finishing in fourth place.

Home Ice Disadvantage?

The Flyers and Devils played a pivotal Game 5 in the Eastern Conference Finals at the CoreStates Center. The road team had won each of the previous four games. It was a back-and-forth game with Kevin Dineen scored twice including a power play goal. Claude Lemieux sent the home crowd disappointed by scoring with 45 seconds remaining. They’d go on to win Game 6 and play for the Stanley Cup.

Trivia Answer – The Phillies had 48 total bases on May 17, 1979, in a 23-22 win over the Cubs in 10 innings at Wrigley.
