This Day in Philly Sports History – July 6

Presented by the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame

It was a solid Philly sports weekend across the board.  The Phillies split with the Royals, but Aaron Nola had a great bounce back in a losing performance yesterday.  Danny Briere comes off the top rope and offers Leo Carlsson an offer sheet that would make him the highest paid player in the NHL.  July 6 featured some offensive fireworks for the Phillies, milestones for some Phillies GOATs and a Hart Trophy for the Flyers.

Lefty is #1

On this day in 1980, the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 8–3.

Garry Maddox led the offensive effort, going 2-for-5 with a home run, a double, and three RBI, while Manny Trillo contributed with three doubles of his own. On the mound, Steve Carlton delivered a stellar performance, pitching eight innings and allowing only one run.

Carlton struck out seven batters during the game. His strikeout of Tony Scott in the fourth inning marked the 2,883rd of his career, breaking Mickey Lolich’s MLB record for most strikeouts by a left-handed pitcher.

Phillies Extra Base Parade

The Phillies beat the Reds 12-5 in 1986.  They tied an MLB record with seven extra base hits in an inning – 4 doubles, a triple and two homers. Jeff Stone and Ron Roenicke hit the homers for the Phillies.

Schmidt is an All-Star

Mike Schmidt was named the starter for the National League All-Stars at 3rd base despite retiring earlier that season.  Schmidt chose to not play in the game but did show up to be honored during the pregame ceremony for the 1989 All-Star game in Anaheim.

Trivia – How many All-Star games did Mike Schmidt start in during his career? (answer below)

Lindros Wins Hart

Eric Lindros won the 1995 Hart Memorial Trophy.  During the lockout shortened 1994-95 season, Lindros scored 70 points in 46 games.

The Phillies Keep Scoring

On this day in 2009 the Phillies scored 10 runs in the first inning thanks to homers by Shane Victorino, Greg Dobbs, and Chase Utley.  The Phillies kept scoring culminating with an 8th inning grand slam by Jayson Werth.  Cole Hamels pitched 7 solid innings, holding the Reds to 1 run on 3 hits.  When the dust settled the Phillies beat the Reds 22-1, good enough for their most lopsided win in team history.

Trivia Answer – Mike Schmidt started 7 games at 3rd base for the National League in All-Star games (1979, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1986, and 1987).  He was chosen to be a starter in 1980 and 1989 but was hurt in 1980 and retired in 1989.
