Mike Gansey and the Sixers made another move that helps the team, signing Anfernee Simons to a 2 year deal. The Phillies are off after losing to Pirates yesterday, they’ll be in Kansas City this weekend. July 3 saw some Phillies feats, a recording setting crowd, and double milestone for Bryce Harper.
Schmidt Has Wheels?
Mike Schmidt has three career inside the park homeruns. The second came on this day in 1977. The Phillies beat the Pirates 11-7 at The Vet. Schmidt went 3-3 with an inside the parker and a triple. The triple almost was another inside the parker, but he was thrown out at the plate. Greg Luzinski had 3 RBI and Richie Hebner had 3 himself and a triple.
Record Crowd
Tim Corcoran and Ozzie Virgil both homered but Jerry Kooseman gave up 6 runs as the Phillies lost 6-5 to the Reds at the Vet in front of a record crowd. 63,816 fans packed The Vet to see the 1984 version of the Phillies fireworks show. The crowd set a Pennsylvania regular season baseball attendance record. The fireworks shows started in 1972 and during the lean late 80s and early 90s produced near sellouts at The Vet.
Trivia – That crowd was the record for a regular season game but when was the all-time Pennsylvania baseball attendance record of 67,064 set? (answer below)
Back on the Horse
A day after the doubleheader marathon in 1993 the Phillies and Padres were back at it at 7:05. Lenny Dykstra hit a homer, but the Phillies lost 6-4. Prior to the game the two teams made a trade – the Padres sending Roger Mason and the Phillies sending Tim Mauser. The move paid dividends for the Phillies as Mason was a consistent reliever for the Phillies during their NL Championship run. Mason, who had pitched in both games the day before, walked over to the Phillies clubhouse as was a member of the team for the game.
Hit Parade
Marlon Anderson went 5-6 with a homer, double and 2 RBI while Ron Gant and Scott Rolen each had 4 RBI. Rolen, Rico Brogna and Mike Lieberthal also homered as the Phillies scored 21 runs on 21 hits to beat the Cubs 21-8 on this day in 1999.
Two Birds, One Stone
On this day in 2019 Bryce Harper hit his 200th career homerun. It came on his 1,000th career hit making him the first player in MLB history to achieve two milestones on one hit. Unfortunately for the Phillies they lost to the Braves 9-2.
Trivia Answer – On October 16, 1983, 67,064 fans filled The Vet for Game 5 of the World Series. The Orioles won the game 5-0, winning the World Series on the Phillies home turf.
