This Day in Philly Sports History – July 22

Presented by the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame

The Phillies lost to the Dodgers, 2-1, yesterday. They had a chance to tie the game in the ninth, but a fourth-grade rec league baserunning blunder helped end the threat. They’ll look to take the series tonight with Aaron Nola on the mound. July 22 has seen some home run power, a winning streak, and some success against the Mets.

Third Time’s a Charm

On this day in 1936, the Phillies and Pirates battled at the Baker Bowl. The Phillies won a slugfest, 16-4, behind a monster performance from left fielder Johnny Moore, who went 4-for-5 with six RBIs, including three consecutive home runs. Chuck Klein also homered for the Phillies.

We’re Going Streaking

The Phillies played the Cardinals in a doubleheader on this day in 1955 at Connie Mack Stadium. They won the first game, 6-3, behind a complete game from Murray Dickson and a three-run home run by Bobby Morgan. It was their 11th straight home win, setting a modern franchise record for consecutive home victories. The record was short-lived, however, as the Phillies lost the second game, 8-1. The winning streak came on the heels of a 13-game winning streak earlier that season. It should come as no surprise that, with both streaks, the team finished the year at 77-77. For those keeping score at home, the current franchise record for consecutive home wins is 12, set in 2010.

Trivia –  What is the Phillies modern record for consecutive games won? (Answer Below)

San Francisco Struggles

On this day in 1966, the Phillies were being no-hit through seven innings in San Francisco by Gaylord Perry. Clay Dalrymple finally broke up the no-hitter with a hit in the top of the eighth, but the Phillies would go on to lose, 4-1. Dalrymple was no stranger to breaking up no-hitters in the eighth inning at Candlestick Park, however. He did the same thing six years earlier, breaking up Juan Marichal’s no-hit bid in 1960.

Phillies Beat Mets

The Phillies beat the Mets on this day in 2001, 3-2, at Citizens Bank Park. Bobby Abreu hit the game-winning solo home run in the eighth inning off Mets reliever John Franco. For Franco, it was the first home run he had allowed to a left-handed hitter since 1993. Johnny Estrada also homered, hitting a two-run shot to account for the Phillies’ other two runs.

Phillies Beat Mets…Again

The Phillies faced the Mets again, this time in 2008 at Shea Stadium. Down 5-2 entering the top of the ninth, the Phillies erupted for six runs, highlighted by two-run doubles from So Taguchi and Jimmy Rollins. Brad Lidge closed it out as the Phillies took over sole possession of first place. The two teams would battle throughout the summer, but the Phillies would take control of the division for good in late September.

Trivia Answer–  The Phillies won 13 straight games in 1977 and 1991.
