This Day in Philly Sports History – July 2

Presented by the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame

Mike Gansey pulled of a Howie Roseman Esque trade, getting rid of Paul George and getting Jaylen Brown.  The Phillies out slugged the Pirate last night and look to win the series this afternoon.  July 3 saw a couple of doubleheaders for the Phillies and some record setting feats.

It’s a Marathon not a Sprint

July 2, 1993, was one of the wildest days in Phillies history.  They were scheduled to play a twi-night doubleheader against the Padres starting at 4:35. The start time of game 1 was pushed back to 5:45 due to rain.  Then there was another delay after the 3rd that lasted almost two hours.  They another after the 5th that lasted almost three hours.  Since it was the Padres last trip to Philly all efforts to get the games in were on the table.  Once the weather finally cleared and the Padres beat the Phillies 5-2 it was 1:02 a.m.  Nobody, including the players thought they’d play the second game.  MLB rules left the decision to the umpires who said let’s play.  Pete Incaviglia was in the process of changing when he was told to put his uniform back on, he was starting in left field.  The Phillies got down 5-0 after four innings.  They would battle back and force extra innings.  In the bottom of the 10th, Mitch Williams hit a walk-off RBI single to win for the Phillies at 4:41 a.m.  Harry Kalas had the famous Mitchie Poo call of the hit.

Rolen Hits Two

Scott Rolen hit two homers including an inside the parker and had four RBI in 1999 against the Cubs. Doug Glanville went deep and had four RBI and David Doster added a 3-run homer and Randy Wolf went 8 innings striking out 10 while walking none.  The Phillies win the game 14-1 at the Vet.

Walk-a-Thon

On this day in 2004 the Phillies lost to the Orioles 7-6 in 16 innings.  In the process they set a team and National League record, walking 16 times including 4 each by Jimmy Rollins and Bobby Abreu.  Ironically in 2013 the Diamondbacks tied the National League record in a game against the Phillies.

Trivia – Which team has the MLB record for walks in a game and how many? (answer below)

Déjà vu?

32 years to the day of that crazy doubleheader with the Padres, the Phillies and Padres played each other in another doubleheader in South Philly.  The Phillies lost game 1 6-4.  In game 2 they won it 5-1, Max Keplar hit a homer and had 2 RBI.  Alec Bohm added 2 hits, and Cristopher Sanchez went seven innings giving up one earned one while striking out five.  Neither game went extra innings.

Trivia Answer – The Boston Red Sox recorded 20 walks in a 1920 game against the Tigers.  The game went 12 innings.  The 9 inning record is 19, set by the Washington Senators in 1971.
