Presented by the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame
The Phillies had a solid team win last night to take the series from the Nationals. They welcome the Blue Jays for the weekend, and Chase Utley will be inducted into the Phillies Wall of Fame tonight. After hearing Jaylen Brown’s press conference yesterday, I’m even more pumped for the Sixers season.
August 7 has seen the Phillies extend a winning streak, a bizarre trade, and a couple of milestone home runs.
The Streak Continues
On this day in 1991, John Kruk homered and drove in two runs, while Wes Chamberlain also had two RBIs, including the walk-off winner in the bottom of the 11th inning. Mitch Williams earned the win for the third straight game, tying a team record for a reliever, as the Phillies beat the Cubs 5–4. It was their second straight 11th-inning walk-off and their eighth consecutive victory.
Bizaro World
On this day in 2000, the Phillies completed one of the more bizarre trades in team history. Ed Wade had traded Mickey Morandini to the Blue Jays a couple of days earlier for a player to be named later. That player turned out to be former Phillie Rob Ducey, whom Wade had traded to the Blue Jays just 12 days earlier for a player to be named later—John Sneed.
So, essentially, Morandini was traded for John Sneed, while Ducey was traded for… himself.
There will be a quiz.
Historic Homer
One year later, in 2001, Scott Rolen, Pat Burrell, and Bobby Abreu homered as the Phillies beat the Padres 7–3. Abreu’s home run was the 10,000th in franchise history.
Trivia – To date the Phillies have over 14,500 franchise homeruns, that is ninth all-time. Which teams are the top five in franchise homeruns? (answer below)
Schwarbombs Times Three
On this day in 2024 the Phillies beat the Dodgers 9-4 in L.A. Kyle Schwarber set career highs with three home runs and seven RBI. Schwarber joined teammate Bryce Harper, who had a three home run game earlier in the season as the second pair of Phillies teammates to have three home run games in the same season. They joined Chuck Klien and Johnny Moore who did it in 1936. Schwarber would beat both career highs one year later during his four homerun game.
Trivia Answer – The Yankees, Giants, Cubs, Braves and Tigers are the top five all-time franchise leaders in homeruns.
