JFK Stadium, originally opened on April 15, 1926 as Sesquicentennial Stadium to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, became one of Philadelphia’s most iconic and historic sports and entertainment venues. Renamed Philadelphia Municipal Stadium shortly after the exposition and later JFK Stadium in 1964, it played host to some of the largest and most memorable events in American history. The venue welcomed a record crowd of over 120,000 for the Gene Tunney–Jack Dempsey heavyweight championship fight in 1926 and later hosted Rocky Marciano’s title-winning knockout of Jersey Joe Walcott in 1952.
It served as home field for several professional teams, including the Philadelphia Eagles, and was a longtime site for the Army-Navy Game, hosting 41 matchups between 1936 and 1979. Beyond sports, JFK Stadium became a legendary concert venue, featuring performances from global icons such as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, and U2, as well as historic events like Live Aid in 1985, which drew nearly 90,000 attendees. After decades as a centerpiece of Philadelphia sports and culture, the stadium was demolished in September 1992, leaving behind a lasting legacy as one of the most significant venues of its era.
