Dave Raymond

Visionary Creator of the Phillie Phanatic and Pioneer of Modern Mascots

Information
Class Of 2026
Phillies, Newark High School, University of Delaware

Dave Raymond, a Newark, Delaware native and University of Delaware graduate, transformed the world of sports entertainment through his groundbreaking work in mascot performance and branding. Beginning as a promotions intern with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1976, he introduced the Phillie Phanatic in 1978 and, as the character’s original performer, revolutionized the role of mascots by turning them into dynamic, interactive brand ambassadors. His work helped redefine the industry, earning widespread recognition, including honors from Forbes, Sports Illustrated Kids, and Good Morning America, and securing the Phanatic’s place among the few mascots featured in the Baseball Hall of Fame.

In 1993, Raymond founded Raymond Entertainment, where he went on to create more than 130 mascots across professional sports, colleges, and major corporations. Widely regarded as a pioneer in “character branding,” he further cemented his legacy by founding the Mascot Hall of Fame in 2005. His contributions to sports culture and entertainment have been recognized with induction into the Delaware Sports Museum & Hall of Fame in 2018.
