Bobby Smith, a local standout from Steinert High School in Hamilton Township, New Jersey, built an exceptional soccer career that spanned collegiate, professional, and international play. At Rider University from 1969 to 1972, he became one of the program’s most decorated players, earning two Middle Atlantic Conference West Division MVP honors while setting school records for career goals (46) and single-season goals (16). Smith went on to a nine-year professional career, playing for the Philadelphia Atoms, New York Cosmos, San Diego Sockers, Philadelphia Fury, and Philadelphia Fever.
A three-time NASL champion with the Atoms, he notably competed alongside Pelé and became the first native-born U.S. player to earn NASL First Team All-Star honors in 1975. Over his career, he earned five NASL All-Star selections and represented the United States Men’s National Team with 18 caps between 1973 and 1980. His lasting impact on the game has been recognized with induction into multiple halls of fame, including the National Soccer Hall of Fame, and the retirement of his number 10 jersey by Rider in 2007.
